The Football Show preview tonight’s Champions League match between PSG and Aston Villa.

When Unai Emery returns to Parc des Princes for the first leg of Aston Villa’s Champions League quarter-finals against PSG on Wednesday, it’s likely to stir up some difficult memories.

Emery was PSG’s coach for one of the biggest humiliations in European history eight years ago.

PSG faced Barcelona in the round of 16 with a 4-0 lead from the first leg, only to lose the return fixture 6-1 and go crashing out of the competition. They then lost the Ligue 1 title to Kylian Mbappe’s Monaco.

Emery left at the end of the following season after two difficult years, which saw PSG dumped out of Europe at the round of 16 stage on each occassion.

“It was a difficult time,” Emery reflected. “For the team to adapt to me and for me to adapt to the team.”

Villa, however, seem to have adapted to the Spaniard’s approach exceedingly well, and head into a first quarter-final in the competition since 1983 on a seven-game winning run.

Emery, who has won the Europa League a record four times as a coach, guided unheralded Villarreal to the Champions League semi-finals in 2022.
